cost of small wedding cake?

Can anyone give me a guess, from experience, the price of a small wedding cake (about 13 guests) ? I’m thinking fondant type of cake.

You really just need a small 2 tier cake (so you can save the top tier for your first anniv).

However cake pricing will vary depending on your location, something in Michigan say will cost less than a cake in California as the cost of supplies for the cake will greatly differ (just like the cost of living). Someone who makes cakes out of their home, will be (almost always) cheaper then a bakery as a bakery has a lot more overhead costs to run the bakery.

Wedding cakes are typically per slice, don’t be surprised to pay $2-4 (or more) per slice. If you want filling inside the cake, that will cost more.

Fondant is more expensive because its more detailed and takes longer to work with, plus the supplies to make it cost more. Don’t get fondant from someone who makes it from a box, get someone who makes it from scratch. Unless they know how to make it correctly from a box, it will well, taste like the box too!

Buttercream frosting (or any traditional frosting) is easier to work with, and costs less to make therefore it is cheaper.

Some people don’t really like the taste of fondant frosting but it does make a cake look really beautiful the way you can do different things with it, that you can’t with regular frosting. Some people choose to put frosting on the cake underneath the fondant since a lot of people will scrape or pull off the fondant frosting.

For a fondant cake that would serve 13 people, I’d say a rough estimate would be about $75-100. (I went with $3 a slice plus a little extra for extra things you’d consider adding)

Some wal-mart’s make wedding cakes but I’d stay away from them making a wedding cake. Most grocery store bakeries receive their cakes already made and just decorate them. Most of their “decorators” are not professionals with little to no training and their everyday cakes the decorations (flowers, borders, etc) are sloppy, this is what your wedding cake will look like too! Some of them will care what their work looks like, some may not. You may find a cake decorator who has done cakes for years and maybe is just working there for something to do or extra money. If you choose a grocery store who has a bakery, make sure you talk to the person doing your cake and see what their experience is & ask to see pictures of other work they’ve done.

If you have a Joan’s or Michael’s store in your area that offers cake decorating classes, I’d see if you can talk to the person who teaches the classes, likely they decorate cakes for a living outside of teaching the class and may be able to do your cake or know someone who can do it at an affordable price.
